In 1973, I arrived at Yellowstone National Park to work for the summer. Although my job in the accounting department might not sound exciting, life in Yellowstone was full of fun and adventure. It is debatable whether “well-behaved women rarely make history.” Does this notion apply as well in this context: “well-behaved women rarely write about history?” You can go either way on that one. I do know that on this road we call The Writing Life, the most important and interesting benefits are the wonderful people met and friends encountered along the way, well-behaved or not.

Eliza Routt was wife of Colorado’s first state governor, John Routt. Considering she behaved in a moderate and dignified manner during her life, which spanned the Victorian Age, she would easily be considered a well-behaved woman. How did a quiet, unassuming spouse of a politician impact history?
